Shawnee County, Kansas
Shawnee County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Topeka.
Geography
The County is located in northeast Kansas, in each case is about 80 km from Nebraska and Missouri in the north to the East and has an area of 1441 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jackson County, Jefferson County, Douglas County, Osage County, Wabaunsee County and Pottawatomie County.
History
Shawnee County was formed on 25 August 1855, one of the first 33 counties that were formed by the first territorial administration. It was named after the Native American people of the Shawnee.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Shawnee County 169 871 people in 68 920 households and 44 660 families in Shawnee County. The population density was 119 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 82.89 percent White, 9.03 percent African American, 1.17 percent Native American, 0.95 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 3.20 percent from other races groups; 2.72 percent were descended from two or more races. 7.26 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 68 920 households out of which 30.7 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 49.6 percent were married couples living together, 11.6 percent were single mothers and 35.2 percent were non-families. 29.8 percent of all households were single-person households and 10.0 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.98.
25.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.8 percent 18 to 24 years 28.4 percent between 25 and 44, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 13.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 90.0 males.
The median income for a household was $ 40,988, and the median income for a family was $ 51,464. Males have a median income of $ 35,586, women $ 26,491. The per capita income was $ 20,904. 6.3 percent of families and 9.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
