Shchedryk (song)

Schtschedryk is a Ukrainian folk song that is well known in the Anglo-American world as Carol of the Bells.

Schtschedryk ( schtschedryj of Ukrainian) was composed in 1916 by Mykola Leontowytsch (for 4 - part choir ). It tells the story of a swallow flying into a man and prophesied to him that much good it will be for next spring. In Ukraine this piece to the Orthodox New Year is sung.

Peter J. Wilhousky is the piece in 1936 under the title Carol of the Bells adapted in English. Carol of the Bells is one of the most famous Christmas songs in the English-speaking world. The English text is not based, however, on the Ukrainian stock.
