Shear pin

A shear pin or shear pin prevents short of machines, shafts and gears to a high torque, by breaking at a high shear stress - strain. The shear pin extending transversely thereto by the shaft and a corresponding sleeve on the opposite side.

A shear pin is a mechanical fuse ( breaking point ), which prevents congestion in expensive components are damaged. Breaks the pin, the shaft is out, but can not transmit more torque.

Shear pins are installed, for example, in machine tools between the drive and work spindle to protect the transmission from overload.

Shear in bridge cranes prevent lifting considerably exceeds the rated load predominant loads and thus overloading the crane.

In outboard motors are avoided by shear damage to the engine and transmission, if the rotating propeller comes in contact with an obstacle.
