Sheila Young

Sheila Grace Young- Ochowicz ( born October 14, 1950 in Birmingham, Michigan) is a former American speed skater and cyclist.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1976, she won the gold medal in speed skating 500 m silver medal in the 1000 meters and was second on the 1500 m distance. Sheila Young became the first athlete of the USA, who won three medals at the Winter Olympics.

Sheila Young was also a successful racing driver on the track. Three times (1973, 1976 and 1982 ) she became world champion in the sprint, she was the first woman world champion in cycling and speed skating in the same year.

Sheila Young is married to Jim Ochowicz, a cyclist, the president of the U.S. Cycling Federation USA Cycling was until 2006. The couple has three children, Alex, Kate and Elli. Elli Ochowicz is like her mother speed skater and participant in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City and Torino 2006.
