Sheldon Garon

Sheldon M. Garon ( born December 17, 1951) is an American historian. He is a professor at Princeton University and sets its regional focus on Asia.

Garon received his bachelor's degree in history at the University of Minnesota, where he earned his Bachelor 1973. He then continued his studies at Harvard University, where in 1975 he received his Master of Arts in East Asian Studies received. His doctorate in history, he graduated in 1981 at Yale University.

From 1980 to 1982 Garon taught as a research assistant in the subject of history at Pomona College in Claremont, CA. Until 1988 he worked as a research associate in history and in the East Asia Studies at Princeton. 1988 Garon was appointed as associate professor. He held this position until 1994, when he became professor of history and East Asian Studies at Princeton University. Sheldon Garon holds the Chair "Nissan Professor in Japanese Studies. Professor of History and East Asian Studies ." Between 2001 and 2003 he was chairman of a committee that dealt with the regional studies at the university. As a result, created in 2003, the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies ( PIIRS ), the toothed international and regional studies stronger.

Garon devotes his research, especially with Japan, but taking into account also transnational and global perspectives. His first book drew the modern history of Japan after reference to the history of the labor movement. In his second book he dealt with the success of the Japanese state to mobilize its citizens. This Garon opened a new perspective on the Japanese economic miracle after the Second World War. His 2011 book, published for savings and spending behavior in the U.S. and Japan was received among the general public. He currently conducts research on Home Fronts: A Transnational Study of Japan, Germany, Britain, and the United States in World War II
