Shemaryahu Talmon

Shemaryahu Talmon (* 1920 in Skierniewice, Poland Shemaryahu Zalmonovitch, † December 15, 2010 in Jerusalem ) was Judah L. Magnes Professor of Biblical Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Life

Shemaryahu Talmon grew up in Breslau, and visited the local Jewish Reform Real Gymnasium. In 1939 he was interned for three months in the concentration camp at Buchenwald, then he was able to emigrate to Palestine.

In 1955 he received his doctorate studies by Umberto Cassuto, Isaac Leo Seeligmann and Paul Kahle with a thesis on the text and the versions of the Tanakh, especially about the " double meanings " of biblical texts from the Hebrew University. In the following years he has expanded his theses and refined and made ​​contributions to many areas of Bible study. He has worked with Moshe Goshen - Gottstein and Chaim Rabin in the Hebrew University Bible Project together, and stood before him since her death. Also in the field of sociology, he conducted research. Both research perspectives he brought together, particularly in view of Qumran. In 1975 he published his studies to Qumran and the History of the Biblical text, and in 1989 the book The World of Qumran from Within.

He was responsible active in many institutions and worked as a visiting professor worldwide. He was a visiting professor at the Institute for Jewish-Christian Studies ( IJCF ) in Lucerne in the winter semester 1981/82. He was Dean of the Haifa University and the Faculty of Human Sciences at the Hebrew University. He was also rector of the Institute for Jewish Studies at the University of Heidelberg.

In interreligious dialogue, he was head of the international Jewish-Christian dialogue and working together with the World Council of Churches and the Vatican.
