Shepetivka

Shepetivka (Ukrainian Шепетівка; Russian Шепетовка / Shepetovka, Polish Szepetówka ) is a city in Ukraine with 48 212 inhabitants ( 2001). The city is located about 100 km north of the city of Khmelnytskyi on the river Huska.

Shepetivka is the hometown of the Soviet writer Nikolai Alexeyevich Ostrovsky. At the time of the USSR, the city was an important transport hub, since met five major rail lines here.

History

The first mention of the city dates back to 1594, the city rights they already received in 1619 and were renewed in 1923. Seven years later, in 1930, it became the capital of the Rajons Shepetivka. Since 1954, include Rajon and city Shepetivka to Khmelnytskyi Oblast.

In the city the POW camp consisted of 306 German prisoners of war of World War II.
