Sheridan Downey

Sheridan Downey ( born March 11, 1884 in Laramie, Wyoming; † 25 October 1961, in San Francisco, California ) was an American politician who represented the state of California in the U.S. Senate.

Life

Downey, son of Stephen Wheeler Downey, a member of Congress from Wyoming Territory, was a student at the University of Wyoming. He later moved to the University of Michigan, where he graduated in 1907 made ​​into law. After he had already been working as a lawyer nearly six years in his hometown of Laramie, Downey moved to California in 1913 Sacramento, where he worked for the next two decades as a lawyer. He married and had five children with his wife Helen.

Policy

Downey was a member of the party and Democrats ran in 1934 on the side of Upton Sinclair for the office of Lieutenant Governor of California; However, without the necessary success. Only four years later, in 1938, he was elected with 54% of all votes in the office of U.S. Senator. Downey resigned his seat on November 30, 1950 down due to his health. His successor was the later U.S. President Richard Nixon.

Late life

Downey practiced in the 1950s in Washington DC as a lawyer, however, was soon settled in San Francisco. Here he died in 1961 at the age of 77 years. In his will he ordered that his remains to the University of California should be made for medical research.
