Sherwood C. Spring

Sherwood Clark "Woody" Spring ( born September 3, 1944 in Hartford, Connecticut, United States) is a former American astronaut.

Spring 1967 received a bachelor's degree in General Engineering from the United States Military Academy (West Point ) in 1974 and a master's degree in aeronautics and aerospace engineering from the University of Arizona.

After graduating at West Point Spring served in the Vietnam war, first from 1968 to 1969 with the 101st Airborne Division, and his pilot training from 1970 to 1971 as a helicopter pilot with the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division. After his return, he received training on combat aircraft and as a test pilot. As a test pilot, he then worked four years at Edwards Air Force Base.

Astronauts activity

In May 1980, Springfield was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate. After the Challenger disaster, he was a member of the so-called Kennedy Space Center Tiger team to contribute to the clarification of the spill. Subsequently, he was until 1988 head of the program for spacewalks.

STS -61- B

On November 27, 1985 Spring began as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Atlantis on its first flight into space. As part of this mission, the three communications satellites Morelos -B ( Mexico), AUSSAT -2 ( Australia) and SATCOM KU -2 were exposed. In two spacewalks Spring proven with his fellow astronaut Jerry Ross method for assembling of structural elements in space.

After retiring from NASA in August 1988 Spring headed for five years, the Army Space Program Office in Washington DC In July 1994, he retired from the Army and became a consultant at The Analytical Sciences Corporation in Fairfax, Virginia. He is currently a consultant for Aerospace Application in Science Corporation in German Maryland.

Sherwood Spring is married and has two children.
