Shiashkotan

Schiaschkotan (Russian Остров Шиашкотан; jap舍 子 古 丹 岛, Shasukotan -tō ) is an uninhabited volcanic island of the Kuril Islands. It is located 25 kilometers southwest of the island Charimkotan and 8 kilometers south-east of the island Ekarma and belongs administratively to the Russian Sakhalin Oblast.

Schiaschkotan is a double island consisting of two volcanoes, which are connected to one another only via a narrow isthmus. The north of the island is occupied by the 934 m-high stratovolcano Sinarka, while the south is dominated by the 828 meter high Kuntomintar. The island is about 20 km long and has an area of 122 km ². The northern part of the island was once inhabited by Ainu, but the outbreak of Sinarka 1872 destroyed the only village.
