The University of Shiga (Japanese滋 贺 大学, Shiga daigaku ) is a national university in Japan. The main campus is located in Hikone in Shiga Prefecture.

History

The university was founded in 1949 by the merger of three state schools. The three were:

  • The normal school Shiga (滋 贺 师范学校, Shiga shihan Gakko in Otsu Cities, founded in 1875 ),
  • Youth Normal School Shiga (滋 贺 青年 师范学校, Shiga his shihan Gakko in Otsu Cities, founded in 1915 ), and
  • The business school Hikone (彦 根 経 済 専 门 学校, Hikone keizai Semmon Gakko ).

The business school Hikone, the predecessor of the Faculty of Economics, was established in 1922 as a commercial college Hikone (彦 根 高等 商业 学校, Hikone Kōtō shōgyō Gakko ) was founded. She was the ninth oldest of the Japanese government higher commercial schools. One of the most famous alumni was Sōsuke Uno, which later became the University of Economics, Kobe visited. 1944 during the Pacific War, the higher commercial school was changed to the pilot. 1946, the school was but changed back to business school, and the former pilot was a prefectural school ( today the Technical Faculty of the University of Shiga Prefecture ).

The University of Shiga was opened with two Faculties: Liberal Arts ( in the older Otsu Cities campus ) and economics ( in Hikone Campus ). The Faculty of Liberal Arts moved in 1959 in today's Otsu Cities campus and in 1966 renamed the Faculty of Education. To date, the university has not had a unified campus.
