Shigeru Kayano

Shigeru Kayano (Japanese萱 野 茂, Kayano Shigeru, born 1926 in Biratori on Hokkaido, Sapporo † 6 May 2006 ) was one of the few native speakers of the Ainu language and a major researcher of the Ainu culture. He was the founder and longtime director of the Nibutani - Ainu Museum in Hokkaido, so he became an important advocate for the culture and traditions of his people. As the first Ainu he was in the Japanese Upper House represented (1994-1998). Since in 1996, the Socialist Party of Japan had split in the Social Democratic Party and the Democratic Party of Japan, he was until his death a member of the Democratic Party.
