Shillong (also Shilong ) is the capital of the Indian state of Meghalaya. The place is located in the Khasibergen to about 1500 meters above sea level and has about 143,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is the administrative seat of the district of East Khasi Hills and houses a university, a seismological observatory, pharmaceutical industry and is archbishopric.

From 1874 to 1972, the elimination of the state of Meghalaya from Assam, Shillong was the capital of Assam. Shillong is particularly damp and gloomy during monsoon, as it lies in the region with the world's greatest rainfall.
