Shimoda, Shizuoka

Shimoda (Japanese下田 市, -shi) is a city and a seaport in Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan. Shimoda is also known for its yellow daffodils.

Geography

Shimoda is located south of Atami and Itō on the Izu Peninsula.

History

The port was opened under the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854 and the consequent forced by the U.S. opening of Japan as one of two ports for trade with the United States.

On February 7, 1855 Treaty of Shimoda was signed in the city between Japan and Russia.
