Shinmoe-dake

Shinmoe -dake in July 2008

The Shinmoe -dake (Japanese新 燃 岳, literally " new, burning Summit" ) is an active volcano on the Japanese island of Kyushu on the border of Kagoshima prefectures and Miyazaki.

The volcano is part of the Kirishima group, which will be around the Bay of Kagoshima. He is 1420.8 meters high.

The Shinmoe -dake was the model for the volcano hideout in the movie James Bond 007 - You Only Live Twice.

Volcanism

The volcano was formed together with the old Karakuni -dake and the Koshiki -dake about 18,000 years ago from lava flows and pyroclastics.

Eruptions are known from the year 1637, between 11 March 1716 to 18 September 1717 pyroclastic flows, mud floods and pyroclastic fall deposits, in which 60 people died and 1771 to 1772 ( with slag, ash fall, pyroclastic flows and mud floods).

Modern Times

1959, 1991 and 2008, there were phreatic explosions and small earthquakes triggered by eruptions.

Activity in 2011

On 19 January and again on 26 January, there were eruptions, the cloud of smoke a height of 1,500 m reached, even briefly of 7,500 m, making the air travel was impaired.

On March 13, 2011 was followed by a smaller outbreak with clouds of smoke that rose up to 4,000 meters altitude.

Due to the outbreaks and the emerald green crater lake, which was at 1239 m altitude disappeared. Instead, there is now a lava dome with 500 m in diameter.
