Shire of Burke

- 17.733333333333139.53333333333Koordinaten: 17 ° 44 ' S, 139 ° 32' O The Shire of Burke is a Local Government Area ( LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland. The area is 40,122 km ² and has about 500 inhabitants.

Geography

The Shire is located in the northeast of the State in the Northern Territory border and the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 1750 km north- west of the capital Brisbane and about 890 km north-east of Alice Springs.

Largest city and administrative headquarters of the LGA is Burketown with about 170 inhabitants. Other towns are Gidya, Gregory, Lawn Hill and Nicholson.

History

The coast on the Gulf of Carpentaria was discovered early on by Europeans and mapped, but only from 1860 onwards began from the exploration and colonization of the land. At the Albert River, the station Carpentaria, which was renamed in honor of Robert O'Hara Burke Australiendurchquerers in Burketown was born. Because of the resistance of the natives, it took until 1885 until a proper settlement with its own administration was formed.

In 1931 in Burketown an Aboriginal mission, which was moved to Doomadgee. The Doomadgee Shire is now an autonomous administrative area which is enclosed by the Burke Shire.

Management

The Burke Shire Council has five members. The Mayor ( mayor) and four other Councillor shall be elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
