Shire of Southern Grampians

The area is 6652 km ² and has about 17,000 inhabitants. Southern Grampians is located in southwest Victoria about 270 km west of the capital, Melbourne and includes the following towns a: Balmoral, Cavendish, Coleraine, Wannon, Hamilton, Dunkeld, Branxholme, Byaduk and Penshurst. The seat of the City Council is located in Hamilton in the southern half of the LGA, which has about 9,400 inhabitants.

The city is called " Wool Capital of the World", the world capital of wool. About six million sheep are in a radius of 80 km around Hamilton and wool production here makes 15% of the total yield for the whole of Australia from. Landmark of the city is a composed of five parts in the form of bales of wool existing building, called The Big Wool Bales, containing a wool museum.

In Hamilton 1936 Ansett Airways was founded, one had been the two leading airlines of Australia to the millennium, but then went bankrupt.

The name has the Shire of the mountain chain of the Grampians, which run north-west of the Shire. To the north is the Grampians National Park and to the west the wine region Coonararra.
