The Shoemaker crater ( formerly known as Teague Ring or Teague Dome ) is a large, heavily eroded impact structure in Western Australia.

Geography

The remains of the impact crater located approximately 100 kilometers north-northwest of Wiluna. The crater is named after the geologist, impact researchers and astronomers Eugene Shoemaker. The striking ring-shaped terrain structure is clearly visible on satellite images. In the area there are several salt lakes lead the water periodically. The largest lake is Lake Tangue.

Discovery

Already in 1974 a hypothesis about a possible Impaktherkunft the structure was published by H. Butler. Subsequent studies have confirmed this assumption as radiation cone and shock effects were found in quartz. A central elevation of about 12 km in diameter joins an annular reduction of about 30 km in diameter. The original diameter of the crater is estimated to be at least 40 km. The age of the impact structure is indicated with about 1.63 billion years ago. Contrast, more recent age gave an age of 1.3 to 0.568 billion years ago.
