Sholom Rokeach

Shalom Rokeach (* 1779 in Brody, † September 10, 1855 in Belz ) was a Hasidic tzaddik and the founder of the dynasty Belzer.

Life

Shalom was an orphan and studied with his uncle Issachar Baer of Sokal, whose daughter he married. In Sokal he was Solomon of Lutsk, a follower of Rabbi Dov Baer of Mezritch, introduced in Hasidism. Other Hasidic teacher of Shalom Yaakov Yitzchak Horowitz were (the " Seer of Lublin " ), Uri of Strelitzk, the Maggid of Abraham Joshua Heschel and Kozienice of Apta. On the recommendation of the Seer of Lublin shalom was appointed rabbi of Belz. According to Horowitz's death in 1815, Shalom was recognized as a tzaddik. In Bel he had a spacious Bet Midrash ( house of study ) build what thousands of Hasidim, including rabbis and tzaddikim famous by Belz flocked and the place became a center of Hasidism in Galicia was. Many legends tell of Shalom miracles. He was also regarded as important Talmudist and stressed the importance of Talmudic studies. He was active in public affairs, tried to improve their economic situation as a spokesman for the galizianischen Jews and was an opponent of the Haskalah, the Jewish Enlightenment. Excerpts from his teachings were collected together with legends and stories from his life and published in Scripture Dower Shalom (1910). Numerous descendants of Shalom were also tzaddikim, including his son- Chenich of Olesko and his son Yehoshua Rokeach ( 1825-1894 ).
