Shona Rubens

Shona Rubens ( born October 31, 1986 in Sydney, Australia) is a former Canadian alpine skier. It belonged from 2005 to 2010 in the Canadian National Team and competed in all disciplines. The six-time Canadian champion drove in the World Cup five times into the top 20 and won four races in Nor- Am Cup.

Career

Rubens grew up in Canmore and was a student of the National Sport School in Calgary. In December 2001, she first participated in FIS races and competitions in the Nor- Am Cup. In February 2002, she won her first FIS races. In the 2004/ 05 Nor -Am season she drove in the two runs of Lake Louise for the first time on the podium, reaching in the downhill score to second place. At the Junior World Championship 2005 in Italy Bardonecchia her best result was sixth in the downhill.

After the good performance in the Nor- Am Cup, she was accepted into the national team of the Canadian Ski Association in 2005 and started from the 2005/06 season in the World Cup. Already in its second race, the departure of Lake Louise on 2 December 2005, she reached the 15th place with start number 58. With the 18th place in the downhill in St. Moritz on January 21, she succeeded in qualifying for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin. There she finished in 26th place downhill, the combination separated them in the first slalom passage out. Shortly thereafter, in 2006 became fifth in the Super G and Twelfth in the downhill at the Junior World Championship. In the Nor- Am Cup they reached four podium finishes this season.

In the next World Cup season was her best result of 18th in the super combination of Altenmarkt on 14 January 2007. More three times she went into the top 30 in the Nor- Am Cup Rubens succeeded in season 2006/07 the giant slalom at Mont Sainte -Anne, the first victory. With further five podiums she came in second place in the slalom standings, third place in the giant slalom standings and finished fourth in the overall standings. At the World Championships in Åre, Sweden, she took 18th place in the downhill and ranked 25th in the giant slalom, slalom and super combined they could not finish. At season's end, she was Canadian Champion in Slalom, Super-G and Downhill.

After a knee injury Rubens was the 2007/08 season starting in January. She focused during the next 15 months on the technical disciplines, but could in the World Cup in any race points. In the Nor- Am Cup, however, she could immediately reconnect to their previous achievements and celebrated on 13 March 2008 in the giant slalom at Whiteface Mountain her second victory. In the 2008 /09 season, she won the slalom at Nakiska and Mammoth Mountain are equal to their first Super -G after the injury break. In the final score she finished second in the giant slalom and overall third parties. At the Canadian Championships 2009 Rubens won for the third time in a row in slalom and won for the second time departure.

In the 2009/10 season Rubens started in the World Cup back in the speed disciplines, while Nor- Am Cup this winter participated in any races. After she had rarely reached the World Cup scoring points in the first half of the season, she scored 29 January 2010 with tenth place in the super-combined in St. Moritz the best World Cup result of her career. At the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010, she was 12th in the super-combined, 21 in the downhill and 28th in the giant slalom. In April 2010, Rubens announced her withdrawal from ski racing.
