Shoreditch

Shoreditch is a district in Hackney in north-east London. It was administratively together with Hackney and Stoke Newington ( parts of the former County of London) in 1965 in the new district of Hackney.

Shoreditch was one of the poorer areas of London. It is sometimes also seen as the trend district, whose dilapidated houses will be rehabilitated in the quality and moves the London avant-garde in terms of design, art and fashion and also the press. Thus, the Reuters news agency maintains an office there. The once seedy bar scene changed in the meantime to well-maintained home restaurants. The former town hall is now a venue for trainings, weddings and banquets. Shoreditch is thus subject to a nearly completed gentrification.

The nearest London Underground station is Old Street; until its closure in June 2006, also the station Shoreditch was in the district. Shoreditch High Street is also the name of a newly built railway station in the East London Line. However, this is in Tower Hamlets.
