Short bone

Short bones consist mainly of spongy bone ( cancellous bone ), which only by a thin shell of compact bone substance ( substantia compacta ) is covered. The compact bone is surrounded to the articular surfaces of the bone skin ( periosteum ). In contrast to the short bones bone have no bone shaft ( diaphysis ).

The short bones are the bones of the hand and tarsus.
