Short Term Conflict Alert

The Short-Term Conflict Alert concept (abbreviation: STCA ) is a proximity warning system, which is implemented as a means of ground-based air traffic control. This collision warning system for air traffic controllers based on secondary radar target tracking and triggers shortly before an imminent collision or dangerous approach an alarm. The triggering criteria are:

  • 45-60 s
  • 5 NM Distance
  • 300 ft height difference

The collision warning system provides an optical (integrated with other optical representations ) and an acoustic ( at work) before warning of air traffic controller in the event of a possibly already emerging within a few minutes separation infringement. It is also sometimes referred to as a collision warning system.

This system can be seen only the failure of the other security measures that are in the air traffic control application (TCAS, flight plan, flight track, graduation and so on ), communicate and may thus be seen as one of the last means of air traffic control. A recommendation (about the ATCO ) are not unlike the TCAS. In order not to conflict with TCAS RAs, the ATCO is held to arrange in the case of an emerging separation infringement with already existing STCA warning significant horizontal exchange rates for the participants, this however only if he has no information about a TCAS RA. If the ATCO has received notification of a TCAS RA, it should not affect the price of the aircraft.
