Short track speed skating at the 2006 Winter Olympics

In the XX. 2006 Winter Olympics were held eight short track speed skating competitions. Venue was the Hall Torino Palavela in Turin.

There were 26 runners from 17 nations at the start.

Seven heats were completed, each with three or four starters. The first and second placed the preliminary round races qualified for the quarter-finals. The first and second placed teams from the four quarter finals qualified for the semifinals. The first and second placed teams from the two semi-finals qualified for the A-final. The third - and fourth-placed should the B-final contest. However, as two runners were disqualified in the semifinals, and the Chinese Ye Li was allowed to advance because of disability into the A-final, was the Chinese Li Jiajun only one on the B-final.

With a new Olympic record won Ahn Hyun -soo his second gold medal of these games. His compatriot Lee Ho -suk took as about 1500 m again the silver medal. Apolo Anton Ohno, the silver medalist from Salt Lake City in 2002, won the bronze medal this time.

Six heats were completed, each with four or five starters. The first and second placed the preliminary round races qualified for the semi-finals three. The first and second placed teams from the semi-finals qualified for the A-final and the third - and fourth-placed for the B-final.

The first short-track decision of these games ended with a double success of the South Koreans. In the A-final, the big favorite and world record holder Ahn Hyun -soo won against his compatriot Lee Ho -Suk and the Chinese Li Jiajun. Apolo Anton Ohno, Defender of Salt Lake City in 2002 and one of the favorites for a medal, committed suicide in the semi-final run without the action of the opponent to a driving error and thus missed the A-final.

A total of eight teams took part.

Two semi-finals were completed with four team. Canada, the U.S., South Korea and China reached as first - and second-placed the A-final. Since the Italians were hampered by the Japanese, Japan was disqualified and Italy could also move into the A-final. The B-final contest, the two remaining teams from Australia and Germany.

In the A- final, translated as expected by the favorites from South Korea. Ahn Hyun -soo hereby won his third gold medal of these Games.
