Shredder (software)

Shredder is one of the strongest and most successful chess programs in the world. Programmer Stefan Meyer-Kahlen from Dusseldorf working on shredders since 1992. Since 1996, the program was already 13 times, but in different categories, win the title of World Computer Chess Champion:

In addition still more victories and top placements come at major computer chess tournaments such as the International Paderborn Computer Chess Championship ( IPCCC ).

The program, currently in version 12 for Windows, Linux and Mac, is sold with its own GUI by the author himself. Version 12 is sold ( for Windows only) by the company ChessBase. There is one version for single and multiprocessor systems, the latter is called Deep Shredder. The opening book was created by the Italian expert Sandro Necchi opening and adapted to the style of play of Shredder. A special feature of the program is to support the so-called Shredderbases, 157 MB compressed endgame databases of all three to five piece. These can be loaded into RAM, which greatly speeds up access.

A program version of Shredder for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile -powered devices is available under the name Pocket Shredder. Since September 2006, there under the name Shredder Mobile is also a version for mobile phones. Shredder is also available in a HD version for the iPad.

Naming

According to the program author Stefan Meyer -Kahlen, the name Shredder comes not from the well-known paper shredder. Surfing the Internet is called driving through certain waves as " shredding ". Here, the naming is then created.

FRC special version

2005 Shredder appeared 9 FRC version. With the new Shredder, the author defined a FRC UCI protocol and provided also still the same fischer chess enabled FEN and PGN before, the notations previously defined by other deviates.
