Due to the general enforcement of the CD player in the late 1980s, demand declined dramatically after cartridges, and thus also stagnated the OEM business. Shure was considering to withdraw from the phono market.

Since 1995, Shure revised under a new management of the phono section its product range and manufacturing processes. This has made it possible to produce much smaller quantities to maintain the usual quality standards at a reasonable market price and to find reliable suppliers.
