Shushicë (river)

Valley of Shushica

The Shushica ( Albanian: Shushicë ) or Lum / ii Vlores is a river in southern Albania. It rises in the hinterland of the Albanian Riviera and flows about 80 km north parallel to the coast of the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea through the circle Vlora.

Due to the geological conditions of the area ( Kartstlandschaft ) the flow tends to seep already in the upper reaches to wide sections at times. The water flow is continuous only after snowmelt and after heavy rain.

The agricultural use of the river valley by agriculture is very intensive and already begins at the headwaters. Along the river there are so far three bridges, they are located on the lower reaches at the places Peshkëpi, Drashovica and Kota, otherwise fords used to cross the river.

The Shushica opens around 15 kilometers north of the southern Albanian port city of Vlora in the Vjosa.
