Shuya, Ivanovo Oblast

Shuya (Russian Шуя ) is a Russian city with 58 486 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Ivanovo Oblast. It is located approximately 300 km north-east of Moscow and 32 km south-east of the regional center of Ivanovo at the Tesa, a tributary of the Klyazma. Nearest city is Kochma, 20 km north- west of Shuja.

The city, which has been known since the 14th century, was originally a trading center. In the 19th century, was established here, as in other cities of the region, the flax processing. Today Shuya has a number of industries, including cotton processing and synthetic fiber factories, breweries, particle board production, and others. Several educational institutions have their headquarters here

Attractions

The city and its surroundings, with several magnificent palaces and former aristocratic residences a treasure house of various architectural styles. There, among other things, the palace, the Elizabeth of Russia 1729 inhabited. Also worth seeing with its 106 meters the tallest free- standing clock tower in the world, built in 1832, belongs to the Resurrection Cathedral (1798 ).
