Shwethalyaung-Buddha

The Shwethalyaung Buddha is a reclining Buddha figure in the town Bago in Myanmar.

This Buddha figure is the second largest reclining Buddha in the world, surpassed only by the 19 m long image in Tavoy. It is 55 m long and 16 m high. Only the little finger measures 3 meters. He is reportedly one of the comfortable living truest shown Buddhas. Buddha is located in a " resting" posture with eyes open and feet slightly shifted.

The Buddha was built in 994 by the Mon King Migadepa II. The figure was later left to decay and then restored several times. With the downfall of Bago 1757 and the Buddha went missing and was overgrown by jungle. Only in 1880, during the British colonial rule, he was re- discovered by chance during earthworks. The restoration began in 1881 and was completed in 1903. In the 1930s, a mosaic on big pillows of the Buddha were placed and routed marble on the floor.
