Si vis pacem para bellum
Si vis pacem, para bellum ( "If you want peace, prepare yourself for war " ) is a Latin proverb.
The originator of the saying is unknown. The basic idea is already found in Plato (Laws VIII) and Cornelius Nepos ( Epaminondas 5, 4). The next statement of the Roman military writer Flavius Vegetius Renatus comes ( around 400 AD ) in the preface to his De re militarized:
"He who desires peace, prepare for war "
In the modern age of the spell was the trademark Parabellum weapons technology.
