Siavonga, also Chapvonga, is a place on the river Lusitu with 18,000 inhabitants ( 2006 estimate ) and a district at the reservoir of the Kariba Dam with 72,000 inhabitants ( IRINnews 2006) in Zambia directly on the border with Zimbabwe, a few kilometers west of Chirundu. Siavonga is located 528 meters above the sea level. Until Lusaka are situated 180 kilometers.

History

In Siavonga, but flooded by the reservoir, lies the archaeological site Ingombe Ilede where settlements dating from the 7th century and were later found to be associated with the Munhumutapareich.

Economy

Siavonga is primarily a tourist and Safariort recent. His oldest house was 1960, built after the completion of the dam. Up here, they produce seven tons of millet in the year, but the city consumes 16 tons. The same is true for corn. So hunger is a constant theme. There is a lack of irrigation equipment, fertilizers and storage facilities. The soils are poor, also elephants trample many fields.

Infrastructure

Siavonga has an unpaved, 1,000 -meter-long airstrip, Kariba has a paved and overall much better -developed slopes. There is a district hospital and primary and secondary schools.

Social

The dominant ethnic group in the district and place is Tonga.
