Å ibenik Cathedral

The Cathedral of St. James ( kroat. Cathedral Svetog Jakova ) is the most important monument of Šibenik in the Croatian Šibenik- Knin and the most important Renaissance building Dalmatia. The cathedral belongs to the list of world cultural heritage by UNESCO.

Construction began in the year 1431st The Venetian builders laid the plan of a three-aisled basilica with apses and cupola based. Under his Bauhoheit the aisles were built up to the summit level, then also the Baptistery with the apses. These included outside of the Ringgesims the citizens' " heads ". From 1477 it was Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino, who continued to build. He had to finish the aisles and built the ceiling finish, a barrel vault of cantilevered stone slabs. He was above the transept also the dome and the completion of the church building to the west. From 1505 were Bartolomeo del Mestre and Giacomo del Mestre, the builder of the cathedral, which they completed. They were supported by Dalmatian Ivan Mastičević, who produced the facade rose window.

The cathedral was completed in the year in 1535. The inauguration took place in 1555. 1895, the church was by Pope Leo XIII. to the Minor Basilica appointed.

Typical of the Venetian architecture of the time church facade, as it has been especially developed by Mauro Codussi, refers to the three-leaf clover shape of the gable on the Trinity. A similar design can be found on the cathedral Sv. Stjepan in Hvar, which dates from the same period.
