Sibinal

Sibinal on the map of Guatemala

Sibinal is a place and a municipality in the department of San Marcos in Guatemala. The town is located approximately 320 km north-west of Guatemala City, and nearly 10 km east of the border with Mexico in the highlands of the Sierra Madre at 1,510 meters above sea level.

Sibinal is accessible from the Departamentshauptstadt San Marcos via a country road that leads east of the volcano on La Tajumulco Grandeza, Serchil and Ixchiguan as well as the 3,400 meter high pass Cumbre de Cotzil in the remote north of the department. Sibinal lies at the foot of the 4,093 meter high volcano Tacaná, on whose crater is the boundary between Guatemala and Mexico. Sibinal is usually the starting point for ascents of Tacaná. Because of the relatively low position of the village the ascent usually takes eight to ten hours.

In the 176 km ² large, economically underdeveloped municipality Sibinal around 30,000 people live. In addition to the main town of the municipality consists of the rural communities ( Aldeas ) Checamba, Chocabj, San Andrés Cheoj, San Antonio Las Barrancas and Volcán de Vega, and from about 40 hamlets. Adjacent Municipalities are Tacaná in the north, Ixchiguan in the east, Tajumulco in the south and the Mexican state of Chiapas in the west.
