Sibirsky, Altai Krai

Sibirski (Russian Сибирский ) is an urban-type settlement in the region of Altai (Russia) with 11,306 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is located in the Altai foothills, about 20 km as the crow north of the regional capital Barnaul. Not far from the village flows the Powalicha which opens good 10 km south-west from the right in the Ob.

Sibirski is one of the enclosed settlements ( SATO ) of Russia and as such the regional administration subordinated administratively directly. The settlement is surrounded by the territory of Rajons Pervomaisky, but is not part of the Rajons, in contrast to the well 5 km north-west of the same village Sibirski.

History

After the 1979 decision made to move a unit of the Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces from the North Caucasus in the area, in 1980 started the construction of the associated housing development for military personnel and their families. The first house was completed in late 1982.

In 1995, the settlement under the previously unofficial, acquired from the nearby village name the status of urban-type settlement and at the same time as SATO.

Culture and sights

2001 Sibirski a Russian Orthodox church was built and consecrated in the name of Saint Barbara, which is considered in Russia as the patron saint of, among other missile troops.

Economy and infrastructure

Sibirski is residential development and supply center of the 35th Missile Division of the 33rd Guards Missile Army ( Omsk ), which is equipped with intercontinental ballistic missiles of the type RS -12M Topol (SS -25).

West of the town runs the railway line Novosibirsk - Barnaul (the eastern section of the former Turkestan -Siberian railway ) with several stops for suburban trains. The M52 highway connecting Novosibirsk to the Altai Mountains and the Mongolian border runs directly past the western edge of the settlement.
