Sibiu Lutheran Cathedral

The Protestant parish church is the most distinctive and still tallest building in Sibiu / Hermannstadt in Transylvania with its tower. Its tower is approximately 73 m high, with a side length of 11 m. He is widely visible from any direction of approach to the city.

History

Sibiu was for centuries the religious and political center of the Transylvanian Saxons, the closed by the church reformer John Honterus assumptions middle of the 16th century, the Lutheran faith. The original ( pre-Reformation ) St. Mary's Church was built in three phases of construction from about the middle of the 14th century on the remains of a Romanesque basilica. In 1448 the so-called " Ferula " was on the west side grown ( and later expanded ), which is now used as a space for exhibitions and musical performances.

Already in 1910, electric lighting and heating in the church were installed.

To date, in Sibiu, the seat of the bishop of the Evangelical Church AB since 2010. Reinhart Guib holds the office as a Protestant bishop. The Protestant parish church is also home to the Sibiu Bach Choir.

Location

The parish church is located in the upper town of Sibiu city, surrounded by Huet Square and the courtyard of the Brukenthal Lyceum, in the middle and the Bishop -Teutsch monument stands. Of the places surrounding the church, there are passages to small and great ring and stairs in the lower town.

Sauer organ

Already in 1350 there should have been an organ in the church, which from this time, however, received no instrument remained. The present organ was installed in the years 1914-1915 from the Wilhelm Sauer. It is equipped with 78 stops on four manuals and pedal, the largest instrument in Transylvania. In 1998, the Sauer organ was fully restored. It is still another organ in the church, which is regularly recorded concerts.

Special

In the nave of the church there are several elaborate epitaphs, including the Samuel Brukenthal. In addition, next to the "new" main altar do not have, in a modified form, obtain parts of the medieval altars. Another important concern is the Rosenauer fresco from 1445 (John Rosenau ), which represents the life, the Passion and the Ascension of Christ.

The bronze font should be made ​​using the material of a fused Ottoman cannon.
