SICRAL 1B

Sicral 1B is a military communications satellite of the Italian armed forces and part of the Sistema Italiano per Comunicazioni riservate ed Allarmi ( German: " Italian system for secret communication and emergencies "). The Sicral system consists of two satellites, a ground station and the terminals of the integrated user.

Sicral 1B is the second military communications satellite Italy. It was built on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Defence from SITAB Consortium ( Thales Alenia Space Italia and Telespazio ), Avio was responsible for the drive system. The satellite was launched on 20 April 2009 from the Sea Launch platform Odyssey with a Zenit- 3SL carrier rocket into space and then positioned in its geostationary orbit of 11.8 ° East at 36,000 km. The 3038 kg heavy Sicral 1B is in the areas of SHF ( five active transponder), EHF / Ka ( a transponder) and UHF operated ( three transponders ). The satellite ensures the communication between the ground station and ships, aircraft and mobile land forces. The intended service life is 13 years.
