Siddhartha is an American film from 1972, based on the story by Hermann Hesse. Directed by Conrad Rooks, who also wrote the screenplay and produced the film. Oscar winner Sven Nykvist did the camera work. The main role was played by Shashi Kapoor.

Action

The Brahman Siddhartha grew up with his friend Govinda. Unhappy with the acquired knowledge, the two men decide to go the way of the ascetics. Together they go into the forest and be Samanas. Siddhartha has not found after years of wandering the fulfillment that he was looking for. When they meet the preaching of Gautama Buddha, Govinda agrees with this; Siddhartha is taking his own path, which leads him to the city. He wants to experience the worldly life for the spiritual.

There he meets the courtesan Kamala know and learn from her the art of physical love. It gives him a job at the rich merchant Kamaswami.
