Sidirokastro (Greek Σιδηρόκαστρο (n. sg. ) ) Is a town in the Regional District of Serres in the northern Greek region Central Macedonia. Sidirokastro in 1946 for the Municipality ( dimos ) applicable to 1997 and steadily increased through incorporations; with the administrative reform in 2010, she went on in the newly established municipality Sindiki, where she has since formed a district. Sidirokastro is also seat of the municipality.

Geography

Sidirokastro located 25 km northwest of the city of Serres, between the mountains and Vrondou Angistro in the north and the river Strymonas in the West. The city is divided by the Krousovitis, one of the tributaries of the Strymonas, in two areas. They are connected by two bridges, " Stavrou " and " Kalkani ". The inhabitants of Sidirokastro locals and refugees from different places: Asia Minor, the Melenikioi who came from Meleniko in 1913, Thracians, who from Eastern Thrace ( European Turkey ) who came in 1922. The region is rich in minerals, especially manganese, copper and iron.

According to the 2011 census, the population of Sidirokastro was 9,294 inhabitants. The municipality Sidirokastro is divided into six villages and has an area of ​​196.554 km ²

Economy

The active population of the municipality (without students, the unemployed and the elderly) is estimated at 4000 inhabitants, of which 68 % in the primary sector (agriculture) are employed, with the main products: tobacco, potatoes, clover, cotton, wheat, corn olives and animal products. In the secondary sector (services) 18% of the population is employed, working in the public sector, banks and shops.
