Sidney Breese

Sidney Breese ( born September 7, 1800 Whitesboro, Oneida County, New York, † June 27, 1878 in Pinkneyville, Illinois) was an American lawyer and politician (Democratic Party), who represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. Senate.

In his home state of New York Sidney Breese attended Hamilton College in Clinton and Union College in Schenectady, where he graduated in 1818. Then he moved to Illinois, was admitted to the bar there and began to practice in Kaskaskia. In this city he served in 1821 as postmaster. From 1822 to 1826, he was attorney for the third judicial district of Illinois, 1827-1829 then District Attorney. 1831 Breese became the first clerk of the Supreme Court of Illinois.

As a member of the state militia he took in 1832 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Black Hawk War in part. He then returned to his legal work, and served from 1835 as a judge for the second district court of Illinois, until he was finally appointed in 1841 to the Supreme Court and this belonged to one year.

Then elected him in 1843 the state legislature of Illinois to the U.S. Senator. Breese took his seat in Washington on March 4, 1843 until March 3, 1849 true and at this time was one of the Chairmen of the Committee on the District of Columbia before retiring from Congress after misguided re-election. He continued his political career but initially continued and sat from 1851 to 1852 in the House of Representatives from Illinois, from time to time as its speakers.

Finally Breese focused but back to the judiciary. From 1855 to 1857 he was a judge at the District Court of Illinois, then again until his death on June 27, 1878 Member of the Supreme Court. He was from 1867 to 1870 as well as 1873 and 1874 respectively the Chief Justice.
