Sidney Rosenthal

Sidney N. Rosenthal ( * 1906 or 1907, † 1979) from Richmond Hill, New York City, was an American inventor. He invented in 1952 the felt-tip pen, which he then called " Magic Marker " ( magic pen).

He filled waterproof ink in a small glass container and attached to the opening a piece of felt. A cap protected the felt tip from drying out. Precursor (without glass tank) existed from the 1940s.

As of 1952, Rosenthal's company Speedry Chemical Products in Richmond Hill, Queens, the Magic Marker ago. This invention was later - by others - modified several times (eg plastic tip instead of felt tip ). So Carter Inc. began in 1958 with the marketing of leaner markers with an aluminum body instead of glass. Speedry other hand, went for patent infringement before the court, but lost the case.

As competitors used water-soluble ink, the shops began to run worse. Rosenthal 1965 sold his shares of the listed Speedry, five years later he sold the naming rights to Magic Marker. At the age of 72 years Rosenthal died.
