Siege of Bilär

The Siege of Bilar took place in August 1236. On their campaign of conquest towards Western Europe, the Mongols destroyed the capital of the Volga Bulgars and massacred the entire population.

After the battle of Kernek 1223, the first major defeat of the Volga Bulgarians against the Mongols, reinforced the people of Bilar, the fortifications with an eleven -kilometer-long wall made of wooden palisades and stone walls. Nevertheless, it does not stop the Mongol invaders succeeded, after 45 days of siege the defenders of Bilar the Mongolian supremacy forced to surrender. The entire population was massacred after the conquest and burned the city. Even today, there are remains of corpses of the former inhabitants in the entire city of Bilar.

With the destruction of the capital, the Volga Bulgars were in fact defeated, even if some cities did not submit to the Mongols in the north of their empire. All attempts Bilar rebuild failed, partly because the capital was moved in later times by Bolgar.
