Siegfried of Luxembourg

Count Siegfried I ( c. 918/929; † probably October 28 998 ) was the founder of Luxembourg: the name " Count of Luxembourg " he does not lead, the name is attested for the first time in the year 1083.

Life

He was - according to recent hypothesis - a son of Duke Giselberts, but certainly of Cunegonde, a granddaughter of King Louis the Stammerer, daughter of Ermentrud and perhaps the Count Reginar I.

Siegfried occurs the first time at around 950, if you do not equate him with Kunigunde son Sigebert, who is mentioned only 942, it being assumed that there is a typo in the corresponding document. At the time (950 ) was Siegfried lay abbot of the monastery of Echternach. He is 982 detected as Count in Moselle district, beyond the imperial abbey of St. Maximin Vogt to Trier and the monastery of Echternach ( after he was probably assigned as lay abbot ). On April 17, 963 he bought the castle Lucilinburhuc ( in the present city of Luxembourg at the Alzette ) in exchange for lands in Feulen in Ettelbrück ( Sauer) with the abbey of St. Maximin. To 964 he succeeded his brother Ardennes Count Giselbert. 964 he earned from Trier Archbishop Henry lands at Saar castle with the island mountain on which the castle was Saar. 984 he fought at the battles for the succession of the Emperor Otto II in Lorraine on the side of Otto III. , Fell into the captivity of the opposite side in the person of the West Frankish King Lothar. After his death in 986, Siegfried managed to escape. On October 26, 997 Siegfried is the last time mentioned as alive.

In the legend of Siegfried the person is associated with the legendary figure of Melusine.
