Siekierki, West Pomeranian Voivodeship

Siekierki ( German: Zäckerick ) is a village in the municipality Cedynia in powiat Gryfiński, West Pomeranian Voivodeship in northwestern Poland. The village is located 72 km south of Szczecin in the Neumark. This region belonged to Germany until 1945. Siekierki is situated on the Oder and has 173 inhabitants. On the other side, or is the German community Oderaue, county or Mark- land in Brandenburg.

Zäckerick was first mentioned in 1355, the village belonged to a family Bredekow. In historical documents, it is referred to as " old fishing village." At the beginning of the 19th century lived in 86 households 753 inhabitants. At the last census in 1939 there were 1238 inhabitants.

During World War II, there was considerable destruction. In Siekierki there is a military cemetery in the Polish army with almost 2,000 soldiers graves and a military museum.

The Siekierki station (until 1945: Zäckerick - Alt - Rüdnitz ) is 1 km west of the village. The last train ran here in 2002. It is the first station on the railway right of Wriezener Or, just behind the Oder bridge. The bridge still exists, the tracks on the German side are removed. About the re-opening of the railway line on the Polish side a long time it was discussed. In August 2012, the bridge was temporarily opened for pedestrian traffic, then closed again for safety reasons. As of June 2013 Draisinenbahn to run over the bridge then summer.

The place name " Siekierki " is not unique in Poland. He also referred to a district in Warsaw ( German: Schellmuhl ) in Krynica Morska ( Kahlenberg ) and Soltysships in Tykocin and Drohiczyn.
