Sierpc

Sierpc ( German: 1939-1941 Schirps, 1941 to 1945 Sichelberg; Yiddish: Sheps, German in the Middle Ages: Scheps ) is a municipality ( gmina miejska ) and administrative headquarters of the rural community in Sierpc powiat Sierpecki. The city is located in the Masovian Voivodeship in Poland. The municipality has about 18,700 inhabitants, to which must be added about 7200 inhabitants of the rural community Sierpc.

Geography

Sierpc situated at an altitude of about 117 meters above sea level. North and south-west of Sierpc there is a larger forest area in the otherwise dominated by the agricultural landscape of Central Poland. The urban area extends over an area of 18.6 km ², the rural community Sierpc on an area of ​​150.23 km ². History

The first written mention of the settlement Sierpc dates from the year 1322. 1322 was the settlement of rights to self-government, which they are collected to the city. Other written sources from the early 11th century indicate an earlier higher position some places, especially in the area around Sierpc before the Christianization of the local population by the Catholic Church to go. Whether it was exactly at one of the aforementioned towns and castles while the present township Sierpc, but is not properly verified.
