Sierra Colorada

Sierra Colorada is the capital of the department of Nueve de Julio in the province of Río Negro in southern Argentina. It is located on the Ruta Nacional 23 at 224 kilometers and is located 450 km from the provincial capital Viedma away.

History

The town's name was derived from the red mountains that surround it. The foundation of the town is celebrated on December 7th, because on this day in 1911 the railway line reached the settlement to San Carlos de Bariloche. In 1939, the City of Sierra Colorada was created by resolution of the National Government, which evolved over time from a Comisión de Fomento a rural community ( municipalidad Rural) for the church today ( municipalidad ). A high proportion of the population are descendants of the Mapuche, the indigenous population of this zone.
