Sierra mountains
Sierra ( Spanish), Serra (Portuguese, Latin, cat. ), Serrano (Spanish port., ) or Serranía (Spanish ) is a name ( Oronym ) for the mountains. It is distributed worldwide.
Word origin
Sierra ( [ sjera ], Spanish " saw", from Latin. Serra ) is the pictorial name of a rugged mountain range or a mountain chain. The adjectival form serrano means in a broad sense in general " mountain ", comparable to the German alpine to alpine. The derived word serranía then corresponds to " mountains " or " hills ". Sierra is next to the Cordillera of the most common component of mountain names.
The Portuguese equivalent is serra [ sɛʀa ], the adjective is also serrano. Also in the Italian language, the term occurs. With the Spanish colonization, the term spread worldwide, especially in South America and the Philippines.
