Sigered of Essex

Sigered (also Sigred, sired or Sigredus; * before 798; † about 827 ) was from 798 to 825 King of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Essex.

Life

Sigered joined 798 succeeded his father Sigeric I. as king. He is known by several charters, which he signed as a witness. 811 he signed as rex (king) some records of the King of Mercia Cenwulf. From 812 he uncertificated only as subregulus ( Under King ), a rank reduction, which was apparently completed on pressure Mercia. Maybe he was with Sigered dux ( as " Duke " Sigered ) identical, the authenticated from 814 Cenwulfs charters. Some historians see the identity as secured. In 825 Egbert of Wessex Mercia defeated at the Battle of Ellandun. After this victory, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and the Kingdom of the Kingdom of Essex submitted the rule of Wessex. Sigered was expelled and Essex affiliated as a sub- kingdom of the Kingdom of Wessex.

Sigered died around 827 After some historians have argued, is at Sigered and his successor Sigeric II to the same person.
