Sigi Feigel

Sigi Feigel ( born May 17, 1921 in Zurich as Sigmund Feigel; † August 28, 2004 ) was a Swiss lawyer who was active against racism and anti-Semitism.

Life

Sigi Feigel was born the son of Russian Jewish immigrants in Zurich. He grew up in Hergiswil and Lucerne. At the University of Zurich, he studied law and graduated in 1949 with a doctorate. In the same year he married Evi home. When his father died soon, he took over his textile factory. Only after the sale of the company in 1977 and after the completion of the legal studies in 1983, he was able to resume his chosen profession of lawyer.

Work

Sigi Feigel was involved in the Israeli Cultusgemeinde Zurich, later in the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities. Under his leadership, the ICZ introduced a women's suffrage and opened with lectures and guided tours to a wider public. He was very active against racism and anti-Semitism and founded several foundations, including the Foundation against Racism and Anti-Semitism GRA, and the Society for Minorities in Switzerland GMS. He fought for the adoption of racism criminal provision (ugs. anti-racism law ) and was an active participant in the debate on the so-called dormant accounts of Jewish Holocaust victims in Swiss banks.

Awards

Sigi Feigel has won several awards. In 1998 he received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Zurich.

2006, the Zurich City named a place at the Sihl river, at the bridge Gessner, according to him, the " Sigi Feigel - terrace ". In 2009, a Sigi Feigel - Visiting Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Zurich was founded.
