Sigirino

Sigirino was, until November 20, 2010 a municipality in the district tavern district of Lugano in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

History

The village appears in records for the first time as Sezelino in the year 1335. The Church of Sant'Andrea was first mentioned in 1296 and rebuilt in the 16th century.

On 25 November 2007, the merger of the seven churches in Vedeggio Valley was approved by the voters of five municipalities: Bironico, Camignolo, Medeglia, Rivera and Sigirino would have therefore have to merge to the municipality Monteceneri. Isone and Mezzovico- Vira rejected the merger. As a result, the State Council decided not to submit to the Grand Council a forced merger of the two hostile communities. Monteceneri was therefore formed only from the five consenting communities.
