Sigma Xi

Sigma Xi is a scientific association that was founded in 1886 at Cornell University. The aim of the Association is to recognize significant scientific achievements and the promotion of cooperation between researchers of different disciplines. The Greek letter " sigma " ( Σ ) and " xi " ( Ξ ) stand for the motto " Spoudon Xynones " which means as much as "Partners in Research".

Today, Sigma Xi is an international multidisciplinary research company with about 60,000 members in over 100 countries. The more than 500 chapters exist at colleges and universities, research centers and government agencies. Admission to the society is carried out by selection. Scientists with recognizable potential are chosen first as receiving members ( associate members ), other notable scientific achievements of the recording shall be a full member. About 5000 members are admitted per year. To date, over 200 members of the society received a Nobel Prize.

Since 1983, selected individuals who have rendered special services to the science or society, as an honorary member ( Honorary Member) was added. These include the politician Stewart Lee Udall (1986 ) and Al Gore ( 1994) and the science journalist David Quammen (2005) and KC Cole ( 2007). More than two honorary members are admitted per year.

The headquarters of the company is since 2004 in Research Triangle Park to Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill in North Carolina.

Sigma Xi publishes the journal American Scientist, which first appeared in 1913.

The company is one of the founders of the movement of Honor Societies.
